Korea, Japan should resume currency swap deal: BOK chief

Bank of Korea Governor Lee Ju-yeol says he hopes Korea and Japan can resume their bilateral currency swap deal, which was halted in January last year due to a diplomatic row between the two countries.
Lee made the remark on the sidelines of the ASEAN-plus-three summit held in Manila on Friday.
Talks over the deal was halted over the installation of a memorial statue for the so-called "comfort women" -- the victims of sexual slavery during Japanese colonial rule -- outside the Japanese consulate in Busan last year.
He was cautious about suggesting the timing of when such negotiations should take place but reiterated that economic issues should be dealt separately from political matters.
Lee pointed out that Korea and China extended their currency swap despite differences over Korea's deployment of the U.S. missile defense system THAAD.
