Plane trails, also called contrails, occur when an aircraft’s hot exhaust meets the low pressure and temperature conditions present in high levels of the atmosphere.

Typically the cloud-like lines are straight, as that’s how jets fly, but recently people in Southsea, Hampshire, UK got a glimpse of a curvy one in the skies above their town.

It’s clear that the plane changed its path, but the reasons behind the momentary shift in direction are unknown.

One person, who spotted and photographed the odd contrail at around 7:20 in the morning, joked that the pilot must have fallen asleep or sneezed.

Others, inspired by reports that an unverified grey, oval object had recently been seen floating in the sky, believe the person flying the plane swerved to avoid a UFO.

Either way, the air traffic control agency that monitors the area was unable to provide an official explanation.

Said a representative of the company, "Unfortunately Nats has no knowledge of the purpose of any given flight and we do not identify individual aircraft to members of the public."

Wind conditions have been deemed an unlikely cause as there wasn’t any notable activity at the time.
