You can’t choose your in-laws. One woman’s distaste for her soon-to-be sister-in-law landed her in hot water.

50-year-old Ann Duffy from Plymouth, UK was sentenced to 8 weeks behind bars for cancelling her brother’s wedding. The major problem was that she did so fraudulently.

Duffy, who clearly didn’t approve of the union, called the Plymouth Register Office on November 5th of last year. Over the phone she pretended to be Sandra Hardy, her sibling's fiancée.

The date of the call was 20 days before the couple’s wedding was scheduled to take place. It was apparent she wasn’t ashamed of her actions because the next call she made was to alert her brother of what she had done.

He, nor his soon-to-be wife were happy. The police were contacted and the case landed in court.

There, Duffy, who has an extensive criminal background, pleaded guilty to causing harassment. In addition to the jail sentence, she was also issued a restraining order against the other woman.

Jealousy and conflict regarding the care of Duffy’s mother were a few factors contributing to the hostility. In the end however , Duffy didn’t get her way. Her brother’s wedding went on as scheduled.
