Fatal Drug Overdoses Reached a Record High in 2017 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released troubling research regarding U.S. overdose deaths. Over 72,300 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2017. This is a 10% increase since 2016 and a new national high. Opioids such as heroin and prescription painkillers made up most
of the overdose deaths. Deaths from fentanyl, a synthetic opioid up to 50 times stronger than heroin, also rose sharply. But an increase in accessible resources for addicts may mean that the deaths will soon level off and decrease. Chris Jones, Director of the national mental health, via statement
